After a 45 year career in professional photography I have covered virtually every genre and worked with some inspirational creative people. I have done shoots in some amazing places aswell as in studio.
After spending four brilliant years at Bolton College Of Art And Design I started my career as an assistant earning barely enough to get to and from work. Over time I worked my way up the ladder till I gained the position of director of the best studio in Manchester.
Not many people get to do something they genuinely love and get paid for it all their working life. I count myself very lucky to be one of those people and I still love the whole photography process as much as ever.
I have seen many changes over my career especially with the technology used in the industry. When I first started 5×4 Sinar cameras ruled the industry and 35mm was regarded as a poor relation in the studio. I learned how to use film in all it’s variations which has proved valuable. Before Photoshop everything had to be right in camera so it gave me an attention for detail and a determination to focus on quality.
As film eventually got replaced by Digital in the studio world my background helped make the transition a lot easier. The biggest difference was the whole process became in house.
I adopted Digital for my personal work very early and it has become second nature nowadays. The advent of Auto Focus and Auto Exposure modes in the late 70’s made 35mm cameras easier to use.
For me the biggest change was when mirrorless cameras came onto the market. I have used Canon cameras all my life and changing to Canon mirrorless has been a revelation. Looking through an EVF that shows me exactly what the result will be gives me the freedom to concentrate on the end result rather than the technical side.
All the pictures on my website were taken using Canon’s superb Mirrorless cameras starting at the end of 2018. My personal work reflects how I enjoy photography. I try to combine lighting with subjects to make eye catching images of the world around us.
